SMART goals: turning big dreams into small steps

"Get healthier" and "grow my business" are wonderful intentions, but they're hard to act on. SMART goals turn intentions into a plan you can follow, and a result you can see.

The five parts

  • Specific: what exactly will you do?
  • Measurable: how will you know it's happening?
  • Achievable: is it realistic for your life right now?
  • Relevant: does it connect to what matters to you?
  • Time-bound: when will you do it, and for how long?

Examples

Health: instead of "eat better," try "I'll add one serving of vegetables to lunch on weekdays for the next four weeks."

Business: instead of "network more," try "I'll reach out to two people in my field each Friday this month."

Start smaller than you think

The best first goal is one you're almost certain you'll achieve. Success builds confidence, and confidence builds momentum. Your coach can help you find the right-sized step, and your journal helps you see each one add up.
